Castrol Techniclean SC 170 (former product name: Castrol Transclean 801) is a high-performance detergent additive designed for cleaning oil systems. It is soluble in all mineral oils and in mineral-oil compatible synthetic oils and is used to loosen deposits formed within the system.
Larger particles are removed from the circulation by filters (screens). Smaller particles are dispersed and carried out during the used oil change.
Application
- Typically added to the oil charge during operation under normal conditions
- Operate the system for about 8 to 15 days under normal conditions (increased filter load may occur)
- For shut-down systems: cleaning is performed by running the oil circulation system; higher treat rates may reduce cleaning time
- For shut-down systems, heating the oil charge above +50 °C may be necessary
- Drain the used oil as completely as possible; except for heat transfer systems, perform an oil flush process
- Maximum non-drainable residual oil content should not exceed 5 %
Recommended treat rates
- Turbine and hydraulic circuits: 0.5 %
- Other circulating oil systems with tank and pump: 1 %
- Individual gearboxes: 1 % to 3 %
- Heat transfer systems: 1 % to 2 %
Benefits
- Cleans oil systems from residues prior to the oil change
- Helps reduce cleaning effort and associated costs
- Loosens sludge and deposits
- Keeps loosened contamination in suspension
- Clean oil systems can support longer service life of the fresh oil charge
Typical properties
- Appearance: dark brown, liquid
- Density at +15 °C: 915 kg/m³
- Kinematic viscosity at +40 °C: 173 mm²/s
- Flash point (COC): +172 °C
- Pour point: < -10 °C
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Castrol Techniclean SC 170 used for?
It is used for cleaning oil systems to loosen deposits and remove contamination prior to an oil change.
How is Techniclean SC 170 typically used?
It is usually added during operation under normal conditions, then the system is run for about 8–15 days.
What treat rate is recommended?
Typical treat rates range from 0.5% to 3% depending on the system (e.g., hydraulics/turbines 0.5%, gearboxes 1–3%).
